Summer is a time of inspiration, bright ideas, creative impulses, and new beginnings. It is during this season that brands are born, unique designs appear, songs are recorded, and projects are created that may later become famous. But there is one thing that definitely should not go on vacation – intellectual property.
While we are catching rays of sunshine, someone may “accidentally” use our logo, copy our design, or borrow our creative idea. That is why summer is the perfect time not only to generate ideas but also to protect them. Registering copyright, registering a trademark, and reviewing contracts are actions that will give you peace of mind during a season when you want to be light, free, and confident in yourself. Intellectual property in the summer is not a formality, but part of your security and stability at any time of the year. We also want to show what intellectual property has been invented for summer in Ukraine.
Inventions: a transformer for recreation and a protective skateboard
What do you associate with active summer recreation? Most likely, the list will include a tent, a hammock, a swing, and a deck chair. It turns out that all of this can be one device, because such an invention has been registered in Ukraine.
The tent-hammock-swing-deck chair is a derivative device consisting of a supporting base, frame, fasteners, and, in fact, a compact tent cover. The tent itself has an entrance and a window. In addition, it can be easily transformed: for lying down, it becomes a hammock; for sitting, it becomes a deck chair; and for entertainment, it becomes a swing. It is suitable for camping, the beach, or the garden.
By the way, scientists at the University of Geneva have proven that simple rhythmic actions (such as swinging in a hammock, for example) reduce stress levels and promote faster falling asleep and deeper sleep. So take this wonderful transformer with you when you go camping, to the beach, or just to the garden to take care of your health.
Of course, one of the most popular ways to relax in the summer is to spend time on the water. Ukrainian inventors have made sure that Ukrainians have creative solutions here as well. For example, water swings are also registered as an invention.
It is a kind of floating platform that can stay on the surface of the water in any position. For this, it has a special rope and a loop for attaching it. The element that holds the swing is an anchor connected to the other end of the rope.
By the way, it is no secret that water recreation has a pronounced antidepressant effect. In particular, water activities have a greater impact on improving mood than walking or even meditation.
Obviously, most seasonal activities involve being in the sun – and this is also great for our body, because sunlight promotes the production of vitamin D, which strengthens the immune system, improves mood, and even slows down aging.
However, excessive exposure to direct sunlight is no longer relaxing, but poses a significant risk to the skin. Therefore, Ukrainian inventors have created a mobile device that automatically predicts the position of the sun in the sky and changes the angle of the shade elements. It is a mobile structure that can be installed anywhere: on the beach, in the garden, or even while fishing. It can be easily rotated, adjusted, and moved to keep you in comfortable shade throughout the day. The result is an invention called the “Sun Skate.”
Useful models: safe tanning and cooling thermoregulation
Continuing the theme of staying safe in nature, we cannot fail to mention sunscreen. After all, the summer sun is not just romantic beach scenes and Instagram photos, but also a fairly active source of ultraviolet rays.
So it is not surprising that Ukrainian innovators have worked on this issue as well. For example, there is a patent for a useful model of a cream for safe tanning. Plant extracts and oils have been added to its composition, which, according to the developers, have anti-inflammatory, bactericidal, and protective effects. These include calendula extract, as well as macadamia, rice bran, and soybean oils.
Another option is a utility model for a cream to prevent sunburn, containing succinic acid. According to the developers, this component has a tonic and regenerative effect, activates cellular metabolism, and helps the skin better cope with stress caused by ultraviolet rays.
Incidentally, a huge breakthrough in humanity’s fight for safe sun exposure occurred in 1962, when Austrian chemist Franz Greiter invented the SPF (Sun Protection Factor) rating. He developed the first cream with an SPF 2 rating, which later became the basis for the global standard for sunscreen products.
Greiter’s idea quickly became part of the industry: since the 1970s, SPF indices have been registered in patent offices around the world, and manufacturers have been protecting the formulas of new creams as inventions or utility models
Industrial designs: summer clothes for summer cafes
Summer is also about design. Sometimes it is the appearance of things that determines how “summery” they are for us, whether we want to buy them, take them with us on vacation, or post them on social media. This is where industrial designs come into play, protecting the visual style and shape of the product.
For example, in the case of a summer sundress, an industrial design captures the uniqueness of the cut, style, and visual details.
In the case of a beach bag-mat, it is about the shape, texture, and decoration of a transformer accessory that works both as a convenient handbag and a soft mat for sunbathing.
However, we are not only talking about clothes and accessories, but even architecture. As in the case of industrial designs for summer pavilions or summer cafes.
The recreational areas we are used to seeing at resorts have also been protected as IP objects. Transparent structures, light materials, streamlined shapes — all of these can be patented as industrial designs.
Trademarks: the season of festivals and thirst
Names, logos, events, and slogans are not just marketing elements, but also intellectual property registered as trademarks (hereinafter referred to as TM).
For example, Atlas Weekend is more than just an event. The TM covers not only concerts and performances by artists, but also merchandise, posters, online products, and the recognizable slogan – “The Festival of Your Summer.”
But no summer event, trip, or adventure is complete without drinks. So what is the main drink of summer? Maybe cider or kvass? Or lemonade? Science says that the correct answer is simpler and more obvious — it’s water. The Harvard School of Public Health recognizes that water is the best choice for quenching thirst, maintaining mental clarity, and feeling good in the heat. And the number of water brands that every Ukrainian knows is truly impressive.
Interestingly, numerous studies confirm that familiar brands evoke a more positive emotional response in us than new or abstract names. In an experiment conducted in the US, participants showed higher levels of satisfaction when tasting drinks from recognizable brands, even
when the product inside was the same. This phenomenon is called the brand cognitive effect — the brain literally “tastes” more when it sees a familiar brand.
So, summer is not only a season of warmth and travel, but also a period when many creative ideas are born. New designs, brands, slogans, projects – all of this is intellectual property that should be protected not “later,” but right now. After all, while you are inspired by nature, the city, or creating something of your own, someone else may use your idea and make it their own.
Copyright registration, trademark registration, and legally sound contracts are not bureaucracy, but an element of caring for your own. And it is in the summer, when there is room for development, that it is important not to forget about the legal foundation of your ideas.
Don’t put off protection until the fall. Contact lawyers now and enjoy the summer knowing that your creativity is reliably protected.
